The Latest News from Parliament Hill

Bill C-51 and the Senator Mike Duffy scandal have been keeping Ottawa busy. The latest is that Bill C-51 has passed the House of Commons, and is now in the Senate, and 29 Liberal Senators have said they will vote against it. We have 51 Conservative Senators, 5 Independent and at present 20 vacancies. The majority of Canadians oppose this bill. Can Canadians force these seats to be filled due to the Bill before them affecting our rights and freedoms guaranteed to the Canadian people as well as our National Security? It is the Governor General who appoints the Senators, with the advice from the PM. If Canadians could force those 20 vacant seats to be filled with non-conservatives there would be enough to defeat the Harper Government’s C-51 in the Senate. Meanwhile, Mike Duffy’s trial is expanding its web of characters that also should be under suspension for their Senate expenses that have been found by the Auditor General to be inappropriate. As many as 10 Senators could face dismissal if the same rules applied to them that they used on Duffy, Wallin & Brazeau. What if those 10 Senators are all Conservatives? We won’t find out until June when the Auditor General releases his report.
